Computer-created pictures claiming to depict Venezuela's president under arrest after his apprehension by the US have amassed many millions of impressions across the internet.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Emerged Soon After

The first fake AI image apparently showing him led off a plane emerged within hours. The graphic was unpublished by any verified government accounts; it was instead posted on X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved the SynthID tool, which found the image was created or altered with Google AI.

Additional synthetic visuals were disseminated in the following hours, seemingly depicting additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures indicate they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis says the further images were similarly produced using AI technology.

Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Continued

Donald Trump shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after the authentic image was released, synthetic images continued to spread but were modified to incorporate the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Online investigation indicate these updated fakes were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art account. Once again, SynthID says these further images were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
