United Nations Lifts Restrictions on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit

The UN Security Council gave the green light to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting next week.

He was appointed provisional head of state after leading a revolutionary movement that removed Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, ending over a decade of domestic strife.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and allied countries for their support the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened for the first time during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to the US during this period. In September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the UN General Assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

In his speech, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
